Softball Safety First - Defender's Masks - Apr 20, 2009

For clarification in our 8U and 10U divisions, here are the BGS league rules regarding defender masks protective gear. In 8U girls must wear a defender's mask in the infield at P,1B,2B,3B,SS. Catcher wears catcher's gear. If a family does not want to purchase a defender's mask or does not want their child to wear one, the child may play in the outfield or use a mask provided by the league. In 10U, the masks are going to be mandatory for all positions. The masks are highly recommended for all players in any all divisions of play for game and practice. The masks are available at our cost of $40 to players at the snack shack. Any family not able to afford a mask, please contact Donna Colson at d.colson@comcast.net and the league will provide one. Several other local leagues have also mandated the masks and many girls are wearing them. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Division, over 100,000 children under the age of 14 suffer facial trauma during youth sports with the highest indicent being female pitchers in softball leagues. We thank those families and coaches that have complied with these rule changes.

Equipment Recommendations -

6U - Glove (About 10 inches), Cleats, Helmet - no face mask necessary
